Performance and "Loading..."

I own two forums, and placed both of them on the network. Both forums exist on the same physical server, but in different directories and under different URLs. For the sake of simplicity, each of the two forums can be considered 100% separate from the other. The only system-level commonality is that they are on the same hardware.

MyPolitics-Forum.com is a brand new and very small forum running on vB 3.8.2 and vBa 3.2.0. It seems to work ok through Tapatalk. MyMedia-Forum.com is a behemoth running on vB 3.7.3 and vBa 3.1.0, and it's useless to try to navigate via Tapatalk. Opening a sub-forum can cause that lovely "Loading..." message to spin for several minutes. It's so bad that I gave up, and that was maybe ten minutes into the "Loading..." (I had time to smoke a cig, mix a drink, and then open my AT&T account and look at upgrading my phone, and then also look at adding a line). There's no way that this will be effective if performance is going to be that poor. Both sites were upgraded to 9.10 tonight. Both sites run great from a browser. The hardware is serious overkill.

Also, what's the cutoff time for displaying threads? I opened a couple sub-forums that simply displayed no threads at all, when I know that they are there.

    Hi,

Yes we aware of this performance issue just in this built - we are working on a fix now and the new one should load a lot faster (~5 seconds). The problem wasn't about the server takes a long time process, it is something to do with the iPhone internally.

We will send out a new built shortly.

Fonz, with a new built can you confirm if the loading problem goes away?

Can you tell us which threads are having problem and or all threads doesn't show?

Attached is one of the thread I randomly opened as guest:

I updated my iPhone to 3.0, and even though pretty much everything is working fine, MyMedia is mostly unbrowsable.

I haven't looked through the network a lot yet, but how many big sites do we have represented here? Is this a problem with my config, or is it a problem with big sites?

Something else... I'm labeled as a Tapatalk Newb, so I feel justified in asking... ;)

    1. The standard "spoiler tag" doesn't seem to work out so well.
    2. Upon opening a forum, there's no obvious way to jump to the latest (read: unread) post. That blows.
    3. Unless I'm missing something, there is no handling for Private Messaging.
    4. Even on my Baby site (mypolitics), pulling up latest posts is too damned slow.
Keep in mind that I'm testing this on an iPhone 3G connected to WiFi @ 20Mb. If it's too slow for me, then the random lurker is going to give a thumbs down.

    Hi,

    What is "spoiler tag"? :D

There is the "Show Newest Post" that can take you to the newest 20 posts. Let us know if this is not good enough?

This is at work ;-) just way to busy to finish it with the OS 3.0 roll out that introduces new problems (such as the performance issues you are having)

We sent you a new built via email - let us know if you still having the performance problem.

All in all, thanks for the feedback - this is something we really need.

Thank god for copy n paste.

That's the mod. I have it also. That's very low on the list.

I'd Like to see registration support within the app and who's online after private messaging.

I've updated both of my forums, but I'm still seeing tremendously long load times for some forums. It's so bad that I cannot in good faith recommend this app to my membership. It's much faster to just navigate via a mobile style.

For example, load MyMedia-Forum.com (Entertainment). Go to Community, and then try to open Community Lounge. Get ready to grab coffee and a smoke. Maybe when you get back, there will be something other than "Loading Community Lounge...". I get the same problem in some areas even on My Politics-Forum.com (Society and Culture), which has only been in operation for a few weeks, and is a much smaller site.

No, that's no going to be good enough. With over 45K threads, over 2.6M posts, and over 26K members, the latest 20 posts is only a drop in the bucket.

Another interface note: The post date is shown only with month and day. What about year?

    Hi The MediaRoom,

We login to your forum with version Tapatalk iPhone 1.2 (The one pending on the app store), browse to the forums you mentioned - did some browsing, then go to a off-topic forum (lostaway?) and created a new post, reply to our own post and so on. Everything took less than 5 seconds.

Are you sure you installed the ad-hoc version we went to you earlier via email? (1.1.5)

Attached are the screenshots we took while we are there...

You may want to remove some of the test posts we created.. :D

Oops. The ad-hoc is on the other phone, and that one isn't available to me at the moment. I have the release (1.1) on this phone.

Okay - let us know if you found some more problems

I've got some users reporting longer threads such as this one are taking a very long time to load.

    Nadiar,

I just loaded the same thread with 1.2 (the one pending on Apple approval) - it tooks 2.5 seconds to show up the thread - Looks like we need to wait for a bit until the new version comes out!
